6.3 Pathophysiology of Voice Disorders in Coaches and Fitness Instructors

The etiology of dysphonia in coaches and fitness instructors is multifaceted. Dysphonia can be secondary to functional, structural, and/or neurologic laryngeal disorders. A thorough discussion of laryngeal anatomy and physiology is presented in Chap. 1 and on the diagnosis and treatment of common voice disorders in Chap. 4. In this section, the authors review the pathophysiology of voice disorders in coaches and fitness instructors, with emphasis on the linkage between body kinetics and laryngeal behavior, the effect of mouth breathing on vocal fold vibration, and the adverse effect of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction and body fatigue on voice.
